Kunal Kamra Controversy: Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has created controversy with his comments on Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. His remarks have angered Shiv Sena workers, who have resorted to vandalism. Additionally, police have registered an FIR against him.
CM Fadnavis Reacts
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has strongly criticized Kunal Kamra for allegedly insulting Eknath Shinde. He stated:
“The way Kunal Kamra tried to insult the Deputy CM of Maharashtra is wrong. We condemn it. Such things cannot be tolerated.”
He further added:
“Kamra should understand that the 2024 elections have made it clear who is anti-national and who is not. You have the right to comedy and satire, but intentionally insulting and defaming senior leaders will not be tolerated. Legal action will be taken as per the law.”
What Did Kunal Kamra Say?
Kunal Kamra mocked Eknath Shinde using a modified version of a song from the Bollywood film ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’. In his performance, he said:
“First, Shiv Sena left the BJP. Then, Shiv Sena split from Shiv Sena. Later, NCP split from NCP. Voters were given nine buttons to vote for, creating confusion. One person started all this—he comes from a famous district in Mumbai called Thane. A rickshaw from Thane, a bearded face, glasses on the eyes, and then suddenly disappears to Guwahati. From my eyes, he looks like a traitor.”
Two FIRs Filed
Mumbai police have filed two FIRs in this controversy:
- One FIR is against Kunal Kamra for his ‘insulting remarks’.
- Another FIR is against Shiv Sena workers for vandalizing Hotel Unicontinental in Khar, where Kamra’s show was filmed.
The FIR against Kamra includes sections 353(1)(B) (public disturbance statements) and 356(2) (defamation) under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) (Indian Penal Code).
The controversy has now turned into a major political and legal issue, with strong reactions from both sides.
