Punjab School Holidays Extended Due to Heavy Rain and Floods, Education Minister Announces

Published:

Heavy rains and floods have created serious problems in Punjab, forcing the government to extend school holidays. On Wednesday, September 3, 2025, Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains announced that all educational institutions in the state will remain closed till September 7, 2025.

He said, “As per the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, all government, aided, recognized, and private schools, colleges, universities, and polytechnic institutes in Punjab will stay closed till September 7 due to the flood situation. Everyone is requested to strictly follow the guidelines of the local administration.”

Schools Closed Twice Before

Earlier, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had declared schools closed from August 27 to 30. Later, the closure was extended till September 3, and now it has been pushed further till September 7.

Rivers Overflowing and Flood Situation

Continuous heavy rains in Punjab and Haryana have made the situation worse. Floods in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir have also added to the crisis, causing rivers like Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi to overflow. Seasonal drains are also flooding, leading to widespread damage in Punjab.

According to a bulletin issued by state officials for the period August 1 to September 2, the floods have claimed 30 lives and affected more than 3.5 lakh people across the state. Relief and rescue work is being carried out by NDRF, Army, BSF, Punjab Police, and district officials.

In Haryana, rising water levels in the Yamuna forced authorities to open the gates of Hathnikund Barrage. On Monday morning (September 1), over 3,29,000 cusecs of water was released.

CM Bhagwant Mann’s Statement

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann is personally monitoring the situation. On September 2, he visited Gatti Rajo village in Ferozepur and assured people that compensation will be provided for all types of losses. He also stressed that the government will look for new and effective measures to deal with such disasters in the future.

Mann said, “We have also demanded the central government to increase compensation for losses caused by natural disasters. Stay strong and positive. The government and administration are fully committed to helping people in this difficult time. Rescue operations are going on, and very soon the situation will return to normal.”

✅ In short, Punjab will keep schools and colleges shut till September 7 as the state continues to battle heavy rains and severe floods.
