Rishabh Pant Shines With Bat, But Gets Warning from ICC
India’s wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant scored a century in both innings of the first Test match at Headingley against England. Despite his excellent performance, the ICC (International Cricket Council) has taken action against him for violating the Code of Conduct on Day 3 of the match.
What Did the ICC Say?
According to the ICC’s statement, Rishabh Pant broke Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to showing disagreement with an umpire’s decision during a match.
What Punishment Did Pant Receive?
Since this was Pant’s first offense in 24 months, he was given one demerit point in his disciplinary record.
For a Level 1 violation, the minimum punishment is an official warning, and the maximum can be 50% match fee fine and 1 or 2 demerit points.
Pant got the lightest punishment – only 1 demerit point.
What Did Pant Do?
During England’s first innings, when Ben Stokes and Harry Brook were batting, the ball seemed worn out. In the 61st over, Pant asked the umpire to change the ball.
After checking, the umpire refused to replace the ball. Pant was unhappy and threw the ball forcefully on the ground, which was seen as disrespectful behavior.
Many videos of the moment went viral on social media.
Who Reported It?
The match officials who reported the incident were:
- On-field umpires: Chris Gaffaney and Paul Reiffel
- Third umpire: Sharafudoula Ibne Shahid
- Fourth umpire: Mike Burns
There was no disciplinary hearing because Pant accepted his mistake.
