In the 1990s, the affair between Akshay Kumar and Shilpa Shetty was a major topic of discussion in Bollywood circles. Their relationship attracted significant media attention, though the couple eventually separated after a few years.
Filmmaker Suneel Darshan, who worked with Akshay Kumar on several films, recently revealed during an interview that Akshay and Shilpa were, at one point, seriously considering marriage. He also shed light on why their relationship ultimately broke down.
‘Destiny Had Something Else Planned for Akshay’
Speaking to Bollywood Thikana, Suneel Darshan discussed the past relationship between Akshay and Shilpa, calling them a “good-looking couple,” but added that “destiny has its own plans.”
He recounted a surprising prediction made years ago by an astrologer close to Twinkle Khanna’s father, Rajesh Khanna, who said that Akshay and Twinkle would one day marry. At the time, Suneel admitted he paid no attention to it, noting, “They had nothing to do with each other at that time.”
Why Did the Relationship with Shilpa End?
Looking back, he found it strange and commented, “See the coincidence, had Shilpa’s parents not put those conditions, life would have taken a different turn.”
When asked about the nature of those conditions, Suneel clarified, “As parents, whatever they seek for their daughter’s security is not wrong.”
Situation Caused Problems in Akshay Kumar’s Relationship
When pressed on whether he meant financial security, Suneel replied, “All kinds of security; all parents desire that.” He went on to say that he did not entirely agree with the approach of Shilpa’s parents, adding, “I felt it was wrong on the parents’ part. It was not meant to happen. Let’s look at it that way.”
Was Akshay Kumar Heartbroken After the Breakup?
Shilpa and Akshay’s breakup occurred shortly before the shooting of the film Ek Rishtaa. Recalling that period, when Suneel was asked if Akshay was heartbroken, he responded, “He was not heartbroken. I thought he was doing well. He was making a comeback.” Suneel recalled that Akshay was very busy with work at the time, managing multiple films like Dhadkan, Hera Pheri, and Ek Rishtaa around the same period.
Akshay and Shilpa Moved On in Life
In 2001, Akshay Kumar started a new chapter in his life by marrying Twinkle Khanna, and the couple now raises two children together. Years later, in 2009, Shilpa Shetty found her life partner in Raj Kundra, and the couple also has two children.
