At the inauguration of the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about India’s achievements in the tech world. He highlighted how India had only two mobile manufacturing plants in 2014, but now there are over 200, which has helped reduce the cost of mobile phones.
What Did PM Modi Say?
He emphasized that, “India is now focusing on providing quality services. The World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA) aims to empower the world, and IMC helps connect the world. India is trying to connect the world by moving away from conflicts. When local and global unite, the world feels the impact. We have made telecom not just a tool for connectivity, but also for opportunity, helping bridge the gap between rich and poor.”
PM Modi’s Plan with Four Key Pillars
PM Modi shared his vision of a holistic approach, explaining the four key pillars identified 10 years ago for “Digital India”:
- The price of devices should be low.
- Digital connectivity should reach every corner of the country.
- Data should be accessible to everyone.
- Digital-first should be our main goal.
He said that India started working on these pillars and has seen significant results.
From 2 to 200 Mobile Manufacturing Units
PM Modi pointed out that smartphones couldn’t become affordable unless they were manufactured in India. In 2014, India had only two mobile manufacturing units, but now there are over 200. Earlier, India used to import most phones, but today the country manufactures six times more phones than before. India is now recognized as a mobile exporter. He also said that India is working to create completely “Made-in-India” phones, from chips to finished products.
India as a Semiconductor Hub
PM Modi mentioned that India is making big investments to develop its semiconductor ecosystem. By focusing on connectivity, India has ensured that every home is connected. The country has built a strong network of mobile towers, even in tribal, border, and hilly areas, installing thousands of mobile towers in a short time. Wi-Fi has been provided at railway stations and public places, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have been connected with undersea cables.
A Record in Optical Fiber
Talking about India’s achievement in laying optical fiber, PM Modi said that in the past 10 years, India has laid eight times more optical fiber than the distance between Earth and the Moon. Two years ago, India launched 5G services at the same mobile congress event, and now almost every district in India has 5G coverage. India is now the second-largest 5G market in the world and is rapidly working on 6G technology.

He said that women have led many digital programs, and today, they are working on technologies in villages that were once unimaginable. The government will continue to encourage this, aiming for every girl in India to become a tech leader.
Cyber Threats: A Global Challenge
In conclusion, PM Modi highlighted the increasing challenge of cyber threats. He said, “Cyber threats are one of the biggest challenges of our time. No country can fight this alone. We all need to work together to eliminate this threat at its roots.”
